Home Computer Security Is Critical

Home Computer Security

Whether you realize it or not your home computer is under constant attack from outside sources.  Think about all the  important information that is stored on your computers hard drive. Important files with sensitive information, passwords for certain accounts and sometimes even account numbers.

If you think about it most computers are not very secure and are easy to break into by ruthless hackers. Most computers are always connected to the internet, even when they are not being used. Computer hackers scour the internet looking for these easy preys. They can get in and download all your information before you know it.

There are many ways a hacker can get into your system. One of the easiest is through a virus attached to an email. Once you open this virus it will attack your operating system by installing a program that gives them a backdoor into your computer. Through this backdoor they can continue monitoring such things as your keystrokes. This means they know every word you type into your computer, like passwords and account numbers.

So what can we do to protect ourselves when we use our computers? One of the first things you should do is install anti-virus software. Also make sure you set it to check for new virus definitions daily. There are hundreds of new viruses roaming the internet everyday so you have to be sure you have the latest protection.

Another thing you want to do is install a firewall. A firewall acts as a security guard at the front door of your computer. His job is to check every bit of traffic entering your computer to be sure they have your permission to enter. This is a very effective way to ensure no unauthorized program can get a foothold into your system.

One of the easiest and most important ways you can protect yourself is to make backups of your computer files on a regular basis. This way, if a virus does wipe out your system you will have a backup of the lost information. Without a backup your precious information would be lost forever.

With a little planning and effort you can input a great home computer security plan. Always be careful of the email attachment you open or the file you download. They could be a ticking time bomb just waiting to attack your computer and your personal information.
