Doing this drastically increases the chance of someone getting you valuable information. When buying a paper shredder make sure you get one that cross cut shreds. Be sure you shred things like utility bills and credit card offers.

 

Make sure you keep an eye on your credit reports. New laws are in place now which allows you to check your credit reports for free once a year. Since there are three major reporting agencies you can check your report ever four months. After reviewing your report, immediately report any unusual activity.

 

When you get your credit card statements make sure you go over them with a fine tooth comb. If you notice any discrepancies report them immediately. Many credit card companies will put out a fraud alert on your account. Also the sooner you notice these errors the better your chance of getting your money back and stopping any further illegal use of your cards.

 

Be sure to protect you social security number. It seems like now days someone is always asking you for your number. Ask why they need your number and how can they insure you your number will be safe. If you don't feel comfortable giving out your number, then don't.
